Android, with all its benefits, is still behind when it comes to software updates. Currently, the best you can hope for is three major software releases, which is also only on some Pixel and OnePlus phones.
Everyone else must be content with two updates, while Apple users are guaranteed up to five updates. Even the recently released Android 10 has yet to reach the majority of eligible devices.
Fortunately, Android has a non-stop developer community, which makes up for the lack of official support. And now, people on the forums XDA have successfully created an Android 10 after almost ten years of Galaxy S2 y Galaxy Note 3.
LineageOS 17.1 brings Android 10 to your Samsung Galaxy S2 and Galaxy Note 3
As expected, Android 10 is coming to the Galaxy S2 and Galaxy Note 3 in the form of LineageOS 17.1. Although there is no "official" version of LineageOS with Android 10, the unofficial versions seem to be working fine, barring a few minor hiccups here and there.
The Android 10 build is (mostly) functional on the Galaxy Note 3 because basic features like calls/text/data seem to work fine. The build of the Galaxy S2, on the other hand, is much more unstable and, to quote the developers, "everyday use is not recommended."
Here is the list of what works and what doesn't:
It works:
– Live Display
–PowerHAL
– Audio, including headphones, bluetooth
- Wifi
– IMEI
– Touch keys
– Camera images
- Video recording
– Hardware encoder/decoder
- Monitor
– sensorsIt does not work:
– RIL (runs but doesn't work, libsec-ril.so crashes possibly due to bionic/libc changes...)
– GPS not working, hangs in native_init (it is disabled in this build)
– Display has vsync issues and glitches
While there's not much to gain from loading Android 10 onto an older device, you still get bragging rights.
Both phones are still flagships and can help you get through some essentials with relative ease even today. Are you one of the few Android users who has kept their Galaxy S2 or Galaxy Note 3 up to now? In the XDA Developers forum (links at the beginning of the article), you will find a detailed guide on how to install the build on each device.
