MSQRD closes on April 13: Facebook kills its first AR service

MSQRD It was one of the first applications that brought us augmented reality to our mobiles. It allowed us to put on filters with faces that turned us into animals or different characters.

Something practically identical to what Instagram or Facebook Live filters offer us today. And, since MSQRD is an app owned by Facebook, Mark Zuckberberg's company has decided that it doesn't make sense to duplicate services.

The end of MSQRD is drawing near

A pioneering application

MSQRD was released in 2016. This means that it was long before countless filter apps started appearing. In fact, it was the first to bring such a service.

But soon after, face filters started showing up in tons of different apps. The one that is most widespread at the moment is undoubtedly Instagram. But there are also others like Snapchat or Facebook Live that have opted for a similar service.

And, of course, keep in mind that both Instagram and Facebook Live are owned by Facebook, the same company that also owns MSQRD. This implies that the same service is duplicated and even tripled. Something that, if we stop to think about it, does not seem to make much sense. And that is why Mark Zuckerberg's company has decided to put an end to an app that was a pioneer in its day.

Until April 13

Obviously, an application can't shut down just like that overnight. And so users have been given a service end date.

The date on which MSQRD will cease to be operational will be April 13. Therefore, we have just under a month left to continue enjoying this service. Once this date has passed, the application of the filters it will stop working forever. Therefore, it would no longer make sense for you to keep it on your smartphone, since even if you try to put a filter on your photos, it will not work as it has until now.

Of course, even if the service is closed, that will not mean that you can no longer access your favorite filters. As those responsible for the application have warned, they will continue to be available in Facebook, Instagram, Messenger and Portal, where you can continue animating your selfies.

More MSQRD alternatives

In addition to Facebook's own applications, there are also other options with filters similar to those of MSQRD. Thus, many smartphones offer similar filters in their own camera, as is the case with Huawei. Snapchat, although it is a social network that is not used as much as it was a few years ago, also has its own function to add filters, in which you will find a large number of very fun options.
