Although the whole world is currently battling the COVID-19 pandemic, OnePlus has started preparing to launch its next flagship OnePlus 8 series on April 14. The company has already shared some of the key hardware specs like the new 120Hz AMOLED display, Snapdragon 865 chipset, and more.
But now we know almost everything about OnePlus 8 and OnePlus 8 Pro.
So if you've been wondering what the OnePlus 8 series has in store for us, here's a quick rundown of the two upcoming flagships:
OnePlus 8
Starting with the design, OnePlus may be looking to refine its flagship lineup with the launch of the OnePlus 8 and 8 Pro. It will take a similar approach to Samsung going forward. It will offer you exactly the same design with its two flagship phones but with little differences in the screens, cameras or batteries section.
The design will now be the same as last year's OnePlus 7 Pro phones , with a dual-curved display and vertical camera setup, minus the pop-up selfie camera. The pop-up mechanism will reportedly be replaced by a punch-hole style selfie camera. A 16MP sensor is expected, which is fine.
Screen
Moving to the front, the OnePlus 8 is expected to have a 6.55-inch Full HD+ AMOLED display with a 90Hz refresh rate. It's the same as the previous generation 7T phone; there are no upgrades for the Pro variant here. The panel will support HDR10+, have improved color accuracy, a faster in-display fingerprint sensor, and more. That's pretty much all we know about the OnePlus 8's display for now.
Processor
Qualcomm's latest Snapdragon 865 chipset will power this mobile phone. It will also feature the Snapdragon X55 modem for 5G support (dual-mode 5G, SA and NSA). Rumors suggest there will be two OnePlus 8 configurations: 8GB + 128GB and 12GB + 256GB. The company will utilize the fastest LPDDR5 RAM and UFS 3.0 storage, along with Turbo Write, as officially revealed.
Cameras
On the camera side, the OnePlus 8 will move away from the circular bump seen on its predecessor and include a vertical setup that we've already seen on the Pro models. Rumored to be a triple-camera array with a 48MP primary sensor (f / 1.8), a 16MP ultra wide angle lens and a 2MP depth sensor.
Yes, it seems that the company will abandon the telephoto lens (present on board the OnePlus 7T) in favor of a depth sensor for, perhaps, better portrait photography.
The OnePlus 8 will likely come equipped with a 4,300 mAh battery but weighs around 178 grams, less than the OnePlus 7T at 198 grams. The company won't be updating charging speeds on the non-Pro version, so expect to see the 30W Warp Charge 30T adapter in the box. The standard variant won't support wireless charging, according to leaks.
OnePlus 8 will arrive in three attractive colors: Glacier Green, Interstellar Glow and Onyx Black.
OnePlus 8 Pro
The overall design and build of the OnePlus 8 Pro will be exactly the same as the non-Pro variant. The key areas of differentiation will be the display and cameras.
Screen
On the front, the OnePlus 8 Pro will feature a larger 6.78-inch Fluid AMOLED 2K+ display with a 120Hz refresh rate and a 240Hz touch sampling rate. This is a step up from the OnePlus 7T Pro. The panel is also expected to have permanently enabled 10-bit HDR support and 1300 nits of peak brightness, according to leaks.
All of this has been officially confirmed, along with the presence of a dedicated MEMC chip. This will allow the device to display exclusive content at 24 fps to 120 fps , providing a much more immersive experience.
Cameras
The OnePlus 8 Pro is rumored to feature a quad-camera system with two 48MP sensors. It will incorporate a 48MP Sony IMX689 sensor (f/1.78) that we recently saw debut in the Oppo Find X2. This will be paired with a 48MP Sony IMX586 ultrawide sensor (f/2.2) with a 120-degree field of view, an 8MP telephoto lens with 3x optical zoom, and finally, a 5MP depth sensor.
In the official marketing image above, you can notice there's also a dual-LED flash and laser autofocus alongside the three cameras on the back.
There is currently no information on which lenses are optically stabilized. In addition, it is said that OnePlus has invested a lot in the camera section, but it is something that we can test once we have the device in our hands.
The OnePlus 8 Pro will likely be the company's first mobile phone with an official IP rating . The device is rumored to have an IP68 rating, meaning it will officially be more water and dust resistant than before. The non-Pro variant is expected to have an IP53 rating.
Finally, the device will be powered by a 4,510mAh battery with a Warp Charge 30T adapter, just like its predecessor, the 7T Pro. This may be a disappointment for some, as we were hoping OnePlus would finally release its own version of SuperVOOC with this lineup.
But I'd be thrilled to hear that OnePlus will finally embrace wireless charging. The OnePlus 8 Pro will likely be the first OnePlus to support wireless charging as well. It's rumored to feature 30W wireless charging , along with 5W reverse wireless charging support.
OnePlus 8 Pro will also be available in three colors: Glacier Green, Onyx Black, and Ultramarine Blue.
Oneplus z
In addition to the two flagship OnePlus 8 devices, the company is rumored to be reviving its mid-range lineup. What was previously identified as the OnePlus 8 Lite is now expected to launch as the OnePlus Z.
It's expected to be a mid-range 5G-enabled phone, similar to the Nokia 8.3 5G and Mi 10 Lite 5G. The OnePlus Z is rumored to be powered by either the latest MediaTek Dimensity 1000 or Snapdragon 765G chipsets , along with up to 8GB of RAM and 256GB of storage.
The device will feature a flat AMOLED screen with a central hole and a refresh rate of 90Hz, as opposed to the curved screen on the flagship models. You'll find a triple camera array on the rear, including a 48MP primary sensor, a 16MP ultra-wide lens, and a 12MP telephoto lens.
The OnePlus Z may come equipped with a 4,000mAh battery with 30T Warp charging support. Since this will be a mid-range device, we don't expect it to support wireless charging, but it's the only thing that can set it apart from the competition if it's included. Obviously, all three phones will be running the latest version of OxygenOS 10 based on Android 10. It will most likely come with a new Always-On Display (AOD) feature out of the box.
Price and Availability
OnePlus CEO Pete Lau has already confirmed that even the higher-end versions of the new OnePlus 8 series will cost no more than $1,000 in the US. The phones will definitely be priced higher than the gen model. above, thanks to the exorbitant price of Qualcomm's Snapdragon 865 chipset (including 5G modem) and IP rating.
You can expect the OnePlus 8 to start somewhere around $600, while the 8 Pro will likely start at $850 in the US. There is currently no official word on whether the OnePlus Z will debut alongside the OnePlus lineup. 8 or not.
So there are no pricing rumors available for this mid-range device, but if it's priced right: around $350-$400 then it could be "the" flagship killer to beat.
